Google Calendar arrives on Wear OS with Tasks integration

Shortly after getting Gmail, Wear OS smartwatches are getting Google Calendar. The app is now available for Google’s Pixel Watch and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineups, including the Galaxy Watch 4 from 2021. You can download it from the Play Store.

Google Calendar is now available for Wear OS smartwatches

Google was first spotted working on Gmail and Calendar apps for Wear OS in November last year. It took the company almost a year to make the apps available for users. Gmail arrived last week, and Calendar is now rolling out too. If you have a compatible watch (running Wear OS 3.5 or newer), you will find the app on the Play Store. It has a size of around 10MB.

Google Calendar for Wear OS watches is basically the “Schedule” view of the phone app. It gives you a list of all scheduled events in your calendar and integrates Google Tasks. The main feed mentions the title and time of the event, but you can open it to see other details like location, notes, and notifications. You can also see what calendar the event is saved to and change your RSVP status, i.e. whether you’re attending the event.

At the bottom, you will find options to open the event details on your phone and delete the event from your calendar. Like on the phone, Google Calendar can recognize events and automatically add backgrounds on Wear OS as well. You will see backgrounds for schedules or calendar entries about birthdays, travel plans, and more. For tasks, you see the date and time and mark them complete directly from the wearable app.

Speaking of tasks, this app brings two new Tiles as well. The “Next event” tile simply shows the next scheduled event in your calendar, along with the option to open the full app. The “Next tasks” tile shows two upcoming tasks with the ability to quickly mark them complete. The “More” button opens the full Calendar app. You can also add “Next event” as a Calendar complication to your watch faces.

You can’t create new events or tasks on your watch

The Wear OS version of Google Calendar notes up to how far the calendar is synced with your phone. However, it doesn’t let you create new events or tasks. You must use the phone app for that. Hopefully, Google will improve the app with updates in the future. If you have a compatible smartwatch, you can search for “Calendar” in the Play Store or simply click here to install the app remotely.
